MTN Uganda through the MTN Foundation has today refurbished and donated to Cwero Health Centre III, located along Gulu – Kitgum road in order to address the health challenges around the community.
As part of the 20 year celebrations in Uganda, MTN has been in Gulu holding a regional expo, which includes Corporate Social Responsibility. At the handover ceremony held at Cwero Health Center III, the MTN representative, Mr. Samuel Okiring noted that the health sector remains an area the company would continue to supporting over the years.
“As a company we cannot solve all the health issues in the country. However we can play a role in improving the health sector by providing vital hospital items that will contribute to bettering livelihoods of the community that uses this health centre. Our commitment is to ensure people are connected to better health services. We believe that investment in the health sector is as important has investing in the communication infrastructure,” he said.
The MTN Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of MTN Uganda is implementing the refurbishment and donation of items in the health centres. On top of giving the health centre a fresh look, MTN Uganda also donated 10 beds, blankets, mosquito nets, mattresses and bed sheets. Two weeks ago, the MTN Foundation also refurbished and donated to Kamukira Health Centre in Kabale.
“Our aim is to impact more people every day by ensuring their stay in health centres is made as comfortable as possible in order to enable their healing and recovery back to full health. The MTN Foundation is committed to continue working with the government – through Ministry of Health and local government officials – to ensure that we support where there is a need.,” explained Bryan Mbasa, The Manger MTN Foundation.
The handover ceremony in Gulu was graced by Hon. Okello Oryem, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who noted that the government should not be the only source of resources to improve the health sector.
“As government we welcome this initiative by the MTN Foundation and applaud you for partnering with us in extending the reach of much needed health care services to the people of this community and the surrounding areas.
However, now that our friends from MTN Uganda have refurbished and furnished this hospital, it is the responsibility of the Hospital administration and District Officials here to ensure that this hospital is furnished with the appropriate human resource and complemented with stocking the much needed medical drugs.,” he said.
In 1998, MTN launched its operations in Uganda. In those 20 years it has paid about Shs 2 trillion in taxes and employs over 500,000 people both directly and directly. On top of that, at least 11.2 million customers use the network to connect. As part of the celebrations, MTN is holding regional expos in order to appreciate the 20 years of being everywhere in Uganda.
