Like music, the comedy industry struggles in the other local languages. It is seemingly easier to make a hit in Luganda than in Rukiga for instance. No idea if it is to do with the market or the actual craftsmanship. But yeah, you get the point. So if someone is capable of cracking you up in another local language or making a hit song in the same, they’re really good.

Sheena Kemihegyeyo Michelle Akatwijuka is a first year student of Drama and Film at Makerere University. She has barely made a year in performing comedy skits online but she has already made big strides. Did she just wake up one day and start performing?

“It was really a joke the first time (pun very intended). I tried out one with my friends and we posted it online. I couldn’t believe the responses from the people. They seemed really entertained and I felt good that I was making people happy. To cut the story short, I haven’t looked back.” Kemihegyeyo recounts.

The 20 year old former student of MaryHill High School in Mbarara has always had a passion for drama and acting. She says her biggest inspiration thus far has been celebrated Ugandan comedienne Ann Kansiime. Her reason for picking inspiration in her is simply “Small Girl, Big Dreams.”

She writes her scripts for herself and believes that trust and belief in oneself is the greatest push everyone needs. “Believe in yourself. Try to make the best of anything you love to do and tell me if you don’t excel at it.”

She posts her skits across social media; on Twitter (@Kemihegyeyo), Facebook (Sheena Kemihegyeyo Michelle), Instagram (kiga_khaleesi) and on YouTube (Kemihegyeyo).
