Pulse Hustler: Meddy Prides in His Decision to Venture in Medical Supplies Business

Latest News | 2021-06-22

When you run into Meddy going about his business in a hospital somewhere or on Twitter, you’d assume that he is living his best life, and rightfully so indeed because he is. Born Meddy Rutayisire, 25 years ago to a single mother, the recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degrees in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University is the first born of two. He attended Budo Junior School and later King’s College Budo for both his O’ and A’ Levels.

At first glance, Meddy won’t strike you for a man who loves to cook, but in his own words, he admits that he’s not so good at it, so that comes as no surprise.  Amongst his very many talents, which include creative and medical writing, farming, data science and graphics, Meddy is a medical doctor who discovered this passion a bit later than most as he was still torn between the law and engineering. “…by S.4, Biology made the most sense so I decided to give it a try at A level. Medicine did sound interesting and could give me an opportunity to impact on people’s lives directly hence I decided to try that.” Meddy fondly recollects.

Even though Meddy had very many professions in mind, he settled for Medicine and he says he has no regrets. When asked when he realized this was the calling for him, he said, “…there wasn’t a particular time in point, but as I gained skills and knowledge, helped people feel better, I gained more confidence and a conviction that this could be the path I take.”  He passionately adds that “the practice is very rewarding, emotionally. It has affected all aspects of my life and how I interact with people. Most importantly, it gives me purpose, there is always something new to look out for and to learn at work…”

Visibly such a compassionate young man, he has learnt to appreciate the ups and downs of the medical profession. “I am new in practice, not so many material gains as such.” However, he urges all the health sector stakeholders to adequately remunerate health workers who go out of their way every other day to save lives. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Meddy was strongly involved in designing, fundraising and the implementation of several charitable projects and it is upon that background that he notes, “I know how it feels to lack and it really sucks.”

For the people who have interacted with Meddy know that he is such an eloquent speaker and also an astute writer, talents that he groomed through the various debate societies he was a part of while growing up. Even though he isn’t interested in taking on forefront leadership, he would be honoured to participate in the planning for the local and global health systems.

Initially, Meddy had a bumpy road with business but he finally settled on dealing in Medical Supplies. It is upon those experiences that he advises Pulsers never to give up in whatever hustles they pursue, but most importantly, to have fun at all times and make friends because life isn’t that serious.
