Pulse Hustler: Meet Flart Gilbert, a Freelance Tax Consultant and Founder FG Consult

Salary earnings are good because they’re regular, timely and frequent but for most Pulsers at the starting level – this income has often proven not to be enough. That is why we celebrate Hustlers at MTN Pulse. Young people that go over and beyond to achieve their financial freedoms and goals.

Today, we feature Flart Gilbert; a hustler who works as a Financial Controller at Home Harvest (U) Ltd, a Ugandan company that supplies quality seeds & agrochemicals but is also a freelance tax consultant for FG Consult, his own initiative.

FG Consult is a mobile/online business that focuses on helping Small and Mid-Size Enterprises (SMEs) to leverage on the various tax planning methods as well as ensuring tax compliance. Majority of SMEs are grappling with tax liabilities and are unaware of how they could sort out the mess. Companies have closed over the years due to failure to comply with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) tax system and he is here to help.

“FG Consult specifically supports such SMEs to overcome such situations without going under.” Gilbert told MTN Pulse.

“The idea of using my career to create a side hustle came in 2019, I had gained experience on job and I always wished to create an impact in society. This compelled me to start using my skills to gain some ‘ka money.’ My services started on an individual level, offering tax knowledge to people. In 2020, I decided to expand my consultancy to a corporate level. I have since grown to offering my services to SMEs.” He disclosed.

Flart says the biggest challenge is his line of work is that some companies always want him to come up with ways to evade tax, which is criminal and not in line with the law. The other challenge is that some companies want services at what he called “a small consideration.”

Remember what we discussed at the beginning of this article. Chasing financial freedoms? Not fully depending on salaries and devising ways to make extra income? Flart says he doesn’t touch his salary earnings at all.

“I have gained a lot from my consultancy business; one is that I am able to pay my bills without touching my salary earnings. This in turn helps me to save and invest more. The business has helped me to buy land around.” He revealed.

His advice to fellow youths is that they need to become flexible and resilient and not dwell on one source of income.

“The future belongs to those making an extra effort. The youths need to realize that setting up a bright future is definitely now.” He concluded.
