Pulse MCM: A Day in The Life of DJ Kasbaby

Latest News | 2021-02-22

David Kassami aka DJ Kasbaby has become a household name in the entertainment industry. From radio to weddings to several events around town, everyone gets excited when his name is mentioned. However he didn’t just become the DJ he is out of the blue. We caught up with him to get some inspiration for young pulsers who want to get into his line of work.

What’s DJ KasBaby’s story? How did you start Deejaying?

It really started as a hobby in my s6 Vac. Truth is I never saw myself here; At that point I was just learning a new skill that I became amazing at. I had my first paying DJ gig in university after making a name playing at house parties for free. I eventually got a job offer that was paying pennies but I loved doing it.

What makes you stand out from other DJs?

I believe it’s my skill, music selection and ability to keep people on their feet. My catch phrase helps too, Fi Di Ladies (For the Ladies).

What have been the ups and downs for you in the business?

One of my major ups has definitely been playing on some of the biggest stages. I’ve been lucky enough to show my craft as opening act for international artistes like Mi casa, Wizkid, Burna boy, T.I.. and also every time I get new fans from one dj set; that’s a great feeling.

The downs-basically THE WHOLE PANDEMIC, because, before all this I was at my peak but that all was put on pause. So yeah, that girl Rona did a number on the DJ business for me and the DJ industry as a whole.

That Rona girl caused bars to close and ended up affecting your line of work, how have you been surviving?

Well, I’ve been looking to invest in a few things that’ll help KasBaby the brand and the Man. You’ll see major moves soon just watch this space.

Over the weekend, I’ve been having a lot of weddings for the typical dj so at least I’m not idle and I get to practice my skills. I also have radio every Friday night and Saturday morning on XFM. The other thing I do is create mixtapes on Mixcloud where people subscribe financially to me and I give them exclusive mixes. I’m busy for the average dj.

To the young pulsers who want to become the next DJ Kasbaby what do you have to say to them?

Finish school! I made sure I finished university even when I was grinding as a dj and after that I got a job as an IT Officer and still was able to DJ over the weekend. It was later that I realized that the brand was big enough to support itself. So what I’m saying is don’t put all your fruits in one basket. Becoming as successful as I am and other big Djs is not as easy as it looks. If you’re getting into it you need to dedicate time, love and money into the craft which is what we all have done.
