Growing up in Uganda, very few kids ever dreamed of becoming a photographer. In fact, back then we used to call them cameramen and they were always confined to their photo studios and events. However, with new technology, exposure and opportunities, very many young people have been able to tap into this lucrative field, and our MCM today is the prime example of that.

Edgar Barlow Hamala, famously known as Baron Edgar via his verified twitter account went to Nakasero Primary School and later Makerere College School where his journey in photography started. “I started photography when I was at Macos with my Teacher and Warden’s iPad Mr. Ssentongo. I started by taking pictures of the rugby team because it was one of those only ways to leave school on a weekend and also access to the Internet while in school.” Professionally, Edgar picked up the big lenses in 2017 and out of all the facets of photography, he settled for sports since he already had the passion for various sports disciplines. This was under the mentorship of Mr. Andrew Katende, a celebrated documentary photographer.

For Baron Edgar, sports photography is both fun and challenging. He says that this field is something that had not been fully embraced the time he joined but there has been a lot of progress that he is happy to say he contributed to. He is also versatile and does a lot of photography including documentary, conferences, co-operate events amongst others together with a team that works behind him and he has plans to unveil the entire crew next month in July.

The Makerere University student is also a social media influencer and manager mainly working with sports personalities. “I have worked with several clients for example Kampala International University and many more, we are in talks with my team to have more teams and sportsmen work with us for management and marketing.” Edgar ambitiously exclaims. He continues in the same spirit, “my biggest goal is to be the biggest sports photographer in Uganda, Africa and the world if possible. I would love to work with some of the biggest brands in the world. I will have to shoot at all world biggest sports events like the FIFA World Cup, CAF AFCON, Olympics, Commonwealth games etc before I retire. That’s not a goal but work in progress.”

Being an ardent fan of Formula 1 car racing, Edgar draws inspiration from world Champion Lewis Hamilton and he hopes Pulsers out there would be inspired. He says, “That’s for all the Kids out there who dream the impossible! You can do it too man. I believe in you guys.”
