The trend of video game movie adaptations continues with Mortal Kombat, and like Need For Speed, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, this movie has got mixed reviews and split sentiments from critics and movie fanatics alike. The 2021 movie which is the third cinema installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise maintains all the blitz and action the video game has gained a reputation for, but falls short on screen play, dialogue and script.

Some of the most beloved characters from the video game like Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, Liu Kang and Kung Lao are back, and this time, they are joined by Cole Young played by Lewis Tan.

The Simon McQuoid film follows a simple plot. Cole Young, an MMA fighter, is not aware of his heritage or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.

Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earth realm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.

But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock the immense power from within his soul in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

With a budget of over 90 Million US Dollars, the makers of this movie went all out guns blazing, and that’s what makes it worth the glimpse of your precious eyes. Mortal Kombat was released internationally on April 8th, but today, 23rd April, 2021, it will be available for streaming.
