As part of their 20 Years in Uganda jollifications, MTN Uganda is set to reward its customers with amazing prizes from the newly launched campaign code named #WeConnectUG

The campaign is aimed at celebrating the beauty and calmness that the pearl of Africa (Uganda) is.


MTN customers are tasked to share thrilling moments in form of photography & videos from their trips and travels within the country showboating the undisputed flora and fauna in Uganda.

The videos and Photos taken are to be shared on social media and users who generate content that attracts a multitude of engagement in form of likes, comments, views and shares, stand a chance of winning themselves prizes on a weekly basis and an overall Grand prize which will be announced on the 14th of February, the final day of the campaign.

MTN Hip Hop Awards Nominees announced

The third edition of the MTN Hip Hop Awards was announced on Tuesday, 15th January. The awards ceremony organized by The Tribe UG is set to celebrate the best hip hop music released in 2018 and are aimed at recognizing the hip hop musicians that made 2018 a good year for the industry.

“We delighted to be back for the third edition of the hip hop awards. 2018 was a competitive year as we saw some household names go all out in the industry. Additionally, we saw some fresh and underground talent come up to express themselves with some good vibes,” explains Felix Byaruhanga, the PR and Marketing Manager at The Tribe UG.

The announcement was made via video link on MTN Uganda’s official Facebook page.

There are 20 categories in the 3rd edition of the Awards, including ‘Song of the year’, ‘Album of the year’ and ‘Video of the year’ among others.

According to Byaruhanga, there is an opportunity for the public to vote for the best by send a message to 7197. Each musician has been given a code and for voting to take place, they’ll have to dial “UGHHA<space> Artist Code to 7197.”

In partnership with MTN Pulse, the awards ceremony will be held on 8th February 2018 at the MTN TIDAL Warehouse located at the MTN Headquarters on Jinja Road. Tickets to attend the awards ceremony are Shs20,000 ordinary and Shs50,000 for VIP.

Speaking at the event, Hellen Kirungi, the Youth Segment Manager, MTN Uganda said “MTN Uganda is once again delighted to be part of the hip hop awards as we appreciate what 2018 was like for this music genre. On top of sponsoring the awards, we are encouraging the public to participate in the fun MTN Cypher competition, an opportunity for them to showcase their rap skills; to win the top prize at stake: UShs1,000,000,”

To participate in the MTN Cypher, one is required to download the MTN Cypher pre-recorded instrumental available on the MTN social media platforms and on MTN Pulse Microsite HERE. They then record a 1-minute video on the track mentioning MTN Pulse. Participants will then share the video with friends with the hashtag #MTNCypher on social media (Facebook and Twitter – tagging @mtnug) to attract likes/retweets.

MTN Uganda shall be rewarding the person with the most likes/retweets with UGX 1,000,000. The 1st runner-up wins UGX 500,000 and 2nd runner-up UGX 250,000.

Mobile Money transfer now easier across All networks

Bank of Uganda directed all Mobile Money operations in Uganda to be interoperable between the telecommunications companies operating in Uganda In 2017. This move was aimed at ensuring that customers from different networks would be able to seamlessly send and receive funds directly across all networks.

MTN Uganda embarked on this integration with other operators starting with Phase 1 which involved the onboarding of Airtel followed by Phase 2 which involved the onboarding of Africell. MTN Uganda on Thursday 27th, announced that it had completed (the final) Phase 3 which saw UTL being switched on, making MTN the first telecom in Uganda to fully comply with the Bank of Uganda initiative.

Speaking at MTN Nyonyi Gardens, Elsa Muzzolini, MTN’s General Manager Mobile Financial Services, expressed joy at the momentous move which was aimed at customers experiencing simplicity and efficiency in mobile money transactions across all networks.

“Now that we have completed this third and final stage, we believe that the winner in all this is the MTN Mobile Money customer who will experience a seamless user experience because they will now be able to send money to all mobile money networks in Uganda without extra hustles” said Elsa.

“We further believe, in line with our group strategy, that this move will drive financial inclusion and ensure digitization of cash transfer in the ecosystem while also fostering efficiency of payments. Because everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life, mobile money transfers should neither be prohibitive or discriminatory.”

With this move, it means that MTN Mobile Money customers can now send and receive money from MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, Africell Money and now M-Sente customers, directly on their mobile phones.

In a related development, MTN Uganda has also integrated with regional operators in Kenya and Rwanda to enable MTN Mobile Money customers to send and receive money around the East African region – specifically to MTN Rwanda and Safaricom MPesa – with Tanzania to be on boarded in early 2019.

To send money the customer dials *165*1# and selects International Transfer. This is another first from MTN Uganda.

MTN Mobile Money has been at the forefront of driving financial inclusion in Uganda. As 2019 approaches, the popularity of mobile money transfer services will continue to rise amongst Uganda’s social and business population. This will largely be supported by increasing adoption of mobile payments as well as an increasing need for cashless transactions.

MTN App Challenge Returns With Focus Of Building Innovations For Digital Payments

MTN Uganda on Thursday announced the 2018 edition of the MTN App Challenge that will allow innovators to develop applications which will be rewarded.

The challenge will be executed in partnership with the Innovation village. On Nov 14th, 2018, MTN Opened its Mobile Money APIs. This was followed by training of local developers on how to use the APIs. The challenge will allow local innovators to leverage the exposed API end points to digitize payments in their applications.

Over the years, we have supported local innovation through platforms like the MTN App challenge and the MTN Innovation Awards. It is our intent to avail our infrastructure to be leveraged by local start-ups. Opening the Mobile Money API was further testimony to this intent. We are very excited to have our first challenge on the Open API platform under the theme “Building for digital payments”; we look forward to enabling the best innovators in Uganda to launch new applications which leverage the exposed APIs to digitize payments, explained Elsa Muzzolini, the MTN General Manager, Mobile Financial Services.

Unlike previous challenges, the MTN Open API challenge 2018 will be fully managed online. Participants will register to create applications in any of the following categories: Transport, HORECA and Distribution in the FMCG value chain. The challenge will run for a period of 2 months from 13th Dec 2018 to 13 Feb 2018, giving developers enough time to develop their idea into working applications. Participants in the challenge will automatically compete to benefit from the MTN start up program with winners receiving cash prizes as well as seed funding through their start up growth journey. The winning apps will be awarded in March 2019 after the judging process has been completed.

Pulse Update: MTN sponsors Jose Chameleon’s “Legends Saba Saba” concert

MTN Uganda on Monday 3rd December, announced sponsorship of Jose Chameleon’s “Legends Saba Saba” concert slated for Friday, 7th December 2018 at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. Chameleon, whose music recently crossed the 20-year mark, has been one of the long-term musicians that MTN Uganda has supported over the years.

According to Valery Okecho, the Manager Corporate Communications at MTN Uganda said that for the last twenty years, the telecom company has supported the music industry and continues to do so.

“MTN and Jose Chameleone have had a strong working relationship over the years; MTN has benefitted from having Uganda’s biggest star entertain MTN customers during MTN events while Jose Chameleone has earned severally from his performances or album launches sponsored by MTN,” Okecho says.

Chameleon often performs at several MTN sponsored events and is known for lighting up the crowds due to his high energy and electrifying performances.

On top sponsoring his concert, MTN Uganda also allows customers listen to high-quality music through its partnership with TIDAL. Musicians have the opportunity to earn from their music through TIDAL and with the future of listening to music being online, streaming services will be a source of income for artists.

“Jose Chameleon is one of those musicians one can find on TIDAL. It is possible to listen to his music even after the concert. There is also a catalogue of local musicians that customers can listen too. It is an opportunity to listen to their music and also allow them to earn some money, which in turn is an incentive to make more music,” Okecho adds.

MTN Uganda this year celebrated 20 years of connecting Uganda and it continues to do that through providing communications services and through events that bring Ugandans together like music concerts.

Tickets for the concert can be bought at MTN Service Centres at Shoprite Lugogo and Kampala Road.

Jose Chameleon comments:

“I would like to say that I was the first local artiste on an MTN Billboard and up to now, I am still a partner of MTN Uganda. I would like people to come and see for themselves. I want to show people that Uganda has musicians who are top notch.”

On why the name “Legend Saba Saba;” “I was born in 1979 and that was the time when the Tanzanians came to help oust Idi Amin. There was a big gun mounted at the time in Mutukula called the Saba Saba. It was a powerful gun and I would want to stand in the might of that gun.”
