Music Review: Bongo Meets UG on Follow Me By Sheebah and Harmonize

Their duo at the 2019 episode of Coke Studio was one of the most powerful in the House: with Tanzania’s fastest-rising star getting coupled up with Uganda’s biggest female artiste of current times, nothing short of that would be expected.

As Coke Studio norms go, they each did a cover for the other’s song, but what has now turned out to be the headline is the original collaboration they came up with. “Follow me”, an urban Afro Pop song appealing to their true lovers/fans to prove the love between them with actions, has received positive feedback from even the biggest critics of Sheebah and Harmonize music.

Crowned by a befitting video shot by Sasha Vybes, the song starts with Harmonize laying a foundation with an abstract intro, and a moving first verse, to which Sheebah retorted with a catchy hook, that Harmonize sang to in chorus. Sheebah let loose and embraced her colleague naturally to bring out true emotion in the passionate dance patterns between them, and the blending of Swahili, English and Luganda in the lyrics was the icing on the cake.

The song also has chord switches that lead to a soothing bridge, which was my most entertainment part in it. Also, the idea of infusing footage of past performances of them both to show the love they get from fans, was wise. Generally, it is a beautiful song both audibly and visually, and you can just double your daily data with MTN Dabolo and check it out on Tidal via the link below:

Pulse MCM: Meet Shaka Mao the Fast Rising Cover Artist

Mao Patrick Shaka a student at Kampala International University while in his first year listened to his guts and ventured into his passion for singing. He took a twist into his journey to fame when he did a Sam Smith – Too good at goodbyes cover together with Gael Will the already famous cover god; but what grabbed the attention of Ugandans was when Shaka did Winnie Nwagi’s Mataala cover. Many could not believe the cherubim we had on this soil. His passion for music is beyond this world you can easily think his voice in auto tuned yet that’s him naturally singing. He has sung in church, at charity events and probably sings in his sleep.

Gael Will who is also Shaka’s mentor in the music field sprung into fame early 2017 after he did a number of known song covers. His angelic voice could not be left unnoticed by Sheebah after he did a “Nkwatako” cover that left the media stunned. The two have discovered that music is their soul and not just any music, but the real deal music. Besides being OBs from St. Lawrence schools, they are united by their uniqueness in cracking vocals.

One cannot speak about Shaka and not speak about his love for poetry, fashion and modeling. He is a lover of the arts that has done a few poems with some of his friends in a group known as the Katochi poets. He says poetry helps him to express himself on several issues and also he loves speaking out on behalf of the small voices that dwell inside his head. Speaking of the arts, he has modeled clothes on behalf of his rising designer friends.

His personality weighs down any heavy hearts. Shaka is described as a happy, kind and soft spoken person by his friends. His charming smile makes him approachable no wonder he has a ton of friends. He is also a fun loving pulser. Anything you call fun he will do. A guy that does not do any sport is quite a windbag. Patrick’s love for the ball and hoops is on cloud 9. Much as he is a friendly person, he appreciates and prioritizes his principals in all things.  To make it to his circle of friends, you just have to have a personality that matches his and better.

Next Big Star: Meet Grenade, the Rising Star Who has Exploded Like a Supernova

Getting a breakthrough in Uganda’s music industry isn’t a task as easy as one may think. In fact, stars that we idolize now, like Maurice Kirya and Spice Diana, endured many years of practice and rejection up until they got the attention their handwork deserved. The story of Grenade is a really inspiring one indeed. From having trouble with school, to finally landing a collabo with Weasel, and now a hit song with Sheebah and John Blaq, titled “Replace me”.

Grenade, famous for his hip fashion style, disproved critics when he pulled off some impressive vocals on “Replace Me”, adorning the hook thus,

“Baby never replace me never replace me nawe eh/ Baby never replace me never replace me nawe…”
To which Queen Sheebah replies with re-assuring lines that she would go wherever he did.

It is very mind-blowing for a boy of barely 20, to be boasting of a hit song to his name in this industry with such cut-throat competition. The effort he puts into his work to see to it that he makes it to the goal he desires is extremely impressive. So dear pulsers, the goal is to never give up on your dreams.
